We have been to Windham/ Hunter on a few trips now and have absolutely loved it! Great food, beautiful mountains, stunning hikes, with cute towns for shopping and antiquing.
Below is a list of where we like to go and stay....
STAY:
The Cabin
We rented this cute two bedroom home on Airbnb, it's set back into the woods and nestled next to a beautiful babbling creek. You have to share a bathroom and it's a smaller sized home but very well done. They also own a few more properties that are equally stunning and a bit larger. Booking well in advance is recommended.
Casa Magda
Casa Magda is a 5 bedroom, 2 bath home that has been recently renovated in Windham, NY. On clear nights there are amazing views of the Milky Way. I booked this house via Airbnb for a girl's weekend, we all had a great time and were very comfortable here!
Scribner's Inn
Located next to Hunter Mountain with well-done rooms and a great restaurant, The Prospect. You can rent the barrel sauna for an hour which is so nice after skiing, and they have fire pits with smores kits around the property, and an ice skating rink set up during the winter months. During the summer months there is an inground pool that's open for hotel guests. I stayed here with my husband and kids over winter break in February, but I don't think I would bring my kids back to stay again (a house is just so much easier with toddlers). We had a great time playing board games in the lobby by the fire drinking delicious cocktails.
Food and Drink
West Kill Brewing
Every weekend West Kill Brewing has a different food pop-up, think lobster rolls and oysters from @oysterparty or Empanada trucks. Paired with a cool crisp beer, a stack of fun games available inside, and multiple fire pits with tables. We LOVE this place!
The Prospect at Scribner's Inn
The food at the Prospect Inn is the perfect Après ski restaurant with delicious food and drinks, what's better than that after a day on the slopes? Tip: the restaurant allows booking one month in advance- make sure to secure your reservations on their site!
Deer Mountain Inn
This is my absolute favorite restaurant in the area! It looks like its someone's cozy mountain home that is set back deep into the woods. Hunting lodge like interiors with couches and club chairs by roaring fireplaces, fantastic cocktails, and a truly delicious hyper local menu, this is a do not miss! They also have rooms for rent that look beautiful, but I would stay here without kids. Its skewed to the more posh older crowd. Make reservations in advance!
Fellow Mountain Cafe
Looking for a perfect breakfast or lunch cafe, look no further than the Fellow Mountain Cafe. I am still dreaming about those cinnamon buns and breakfast sandwiches... The line can be long in the winter but worth it.
Jessies Harvest House
Great restaurant with local food, wonderful cocktail list and down to earth atmosphere. It's a tavern you would dress casually to with an elevated seasonal menu.
Day June
A delicious breakfast and Lunch restaurant just opened up about 10 minutes from Hunter Mountain called Day June. Yummmmmm.
Outdoor Activities
Hunter and Windham Mountain
There are two great ski mountains' close to the NY metro area both about 15 minutes apart. Pro tip go early, it gets packed in the afternoon and a lot of people have been drinking by then. I like to go first thing in the morning and then apès hard after. Both mountains have fire pits, food, drinks, and live music most weekends!
Katterskills Falls
The crowning jewel is the highest cascading waterfall in New York State – Kaaterskill Falls which drops in two tiers over 260 feet is a beautiful site to see. Easy hike that can be done with kids and has a few different viewpoints and trails to take. This is definite do not miss!
Shopping in Tannersville
Tannersville has some really cute antique stores and shops to check out while you are in the area!
Very cute home goods store that is well curated!
